Children’s newspaper First News recently relaunched its safety campaign to warn of the serious dangers of phone use around roads

First News relaunched its Look Up! campaign in September, to remind young people of the dangers of phone use around roads. Last year, over 4,500 pedestrians aged 15 and under were injured – that’s a classroom each week. Experts have identified that the majority of these incidents occur between 8am and 9am and between 3pm and 7pm, with children aged 12 most susceptible to accidents as they gain independence while walking to and from school.

By the age of 11, over 90% of children in the UK own a smartphone. There is a clear link between the use of mobile devices and the time of serious accidents involving children, particularly at the end of the school day.

The assembly pack offered to schools across the UK by First News reminded children to put phones away and avoid being a SMOMBIE (smartphones + zombies).
