Leading independent school, Portland Place School has introduced an innovative new scheme, ‘Symphonfree’, to benefit budding-young musicians attending the school.

The Symphonfree initiative welcomes Year 7 pupils at Marylebone-based Portland Place to express their musical creativity by selecting and learning an orchestral instrument of their choice. Pupils will receive complimentary tuition in a range of instruments including violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet and trombone.

Introduced as part of the compulsory curriculum for Music, all pupils will benefit from weekly, half-hour lessons in groups of two or three which will enable the children to enhance their skills. The first-class music tuition will prepare them to perform individually and as part of an ensemble at a variety of concerts throughout the year, showcasing their talents to friends, staff members and family.

Director of Music at Portland Place School, Steve Hill commented: “We are very excited that we are able to provide our pupils with this unique opportunity to flourish, allowing them to express their musical creativity whilst developing their personal skills. Initiatives like the Symphonfree project, empower and inspire our pupils to pursue their talents, enabling us to foster their creativity but still encourage them to achieve their best academically.

“At Portland Place School we pride ourselves on offering a refreshing alternative to traditional learning environments and acknowledge that by cultivating creativity through enabling students to use their imagination and develop their passion, we can facilitate creative outputs in all aspects of school life.”

Portland Place School is a leading independent co-educational school for children aged 10-16, located directly in the heart of the City of Westminster. It was founded with a particular purpose in mind: to be an alternative to the intense, large, examinations focused independent day schools of which there are many in London.

The school ethos is to be small, nurturing and be relaxed, encouraging and enabling those who attend to achieve their very best academically, with space to develop and express their creativity and athleticism.

It is also building a contemporary dining facility and developing a larger multi-functional performance area.
