Dulwich College in south-east London is the steward of a very special boat, attracting interest in the centenary year of Shackleton’s final expedition
In the centenary of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s final expedition – and with the discovery of Endurance early this year – Dulwich College reports lots of interest in James Caird, the boat used for a perilous sailing to South Georgia to secure a crew rescue. It has pride of place in the College Laboratory. Earlier in the year, the school welcomed visits from both the Chilean Ambassador to London and from Dan Snow (who was about to embark on his expedition to find Endurance).
Sir Ernest Shackleton is among the most famous Old Alleynians. In honour of his achievements and ahead of his centenary year, the College produced a short film. It also has a school workbook and teacher resource pack. School visits are welcomed regularly during term times, and public visits are also available during term times on Friday mornings. Both types of visit are booked via the school website, where you can also find more information about Shackleton and the James Caird.
