WWF call for nature at playtime

WWF is supporting primary schools to bring nature back into their playgrounds, where hard surfaces currently dominate

WWF’s Happy by Nature initiative aims tackle what it calls ‘green space inequality’ in primary schools. It highlights the absence of natural features, such as grass and trees, in many playgrounds, replaced by hard surfaces and fixed play equipment. WWF will provide funding, expertise and free toolkits to help schools improve nature-based play.

The initiative includes a £100,000 fund for ten pilot schools to green their outdoor space. There will be free toolkits for all schools with practical guidance to help improve nature-based play and activities. WWF will also partner with other organisations to provide outdoor gear and create a new learning platform so children can get involved in exploring and protecting the natural world. The initiative is part of WWF’s flagship Prescription for Nature programme, promoting the benefits of spending 20 minutes outdoors each day to improve mental wellbeing.
